Not all lawyers are leeches
Let's get the embarrassing bit out of the way first: my name is Stuart, and I'm a lawyer.
Based on this information (the being-a-lawyer bit and not, I hope, the being-called-Stuart bit), some of you may think that I am a filthy-rich leech on the face of society making hay keeping guilty-as-sin criminals out of the prison cells into which they should be thrown.
,
Or that's the reaction I tend to get when I tell someone I've just met at a party that I'm a lawyer - "How do you defend people you know are guilty?"
Well, I don't.
I'm a construction lawyer based in Brum who specialises in drafting and negotiating documents to help get buildings built - the refurbishment of Baskerville House is one example.
Born in Coventry, raised in Scotland and living and working in Birmingham (my wife likes to say Bournville to sound posh, but it's really Cotteridge), I am passionate about our city and the wider West Midlands, the built environment and the music of Bruce Springsteen.
I've been trying to think of a grand-sounding reason why I am writing this but the honest answer is that Karen in our marketing team told me to volunteer (and you don't mess with Karen).
I hope to cover a whole range of stuff that will mainly have a construction or property or legal twist with the odd rant about Scottish rugby, Dundee United and why Born to Run is the greatest rock and roll album of all time thrown in for good measure. And if I can change any stereotypes about lawyers along the way, so much the better.
I'm also trying to meet nicer people at parties, but that's another story.

Hi Stuart - welcome aboard
Just one question from your first blog...
how do you defend buildings you know are guilty?
Thanks Mik - my first ever comment. To answer your question a bit more seriously than I think you intended, I hope the second blog shows that I don't.
Hi Stuart,
It took us until Tuesday to get over the shock of the Culcutta cup win- you have been strangely silent on the issue.
There is a rumour (that a girl close to my heart is trying to start) that Chris Paterson can walk on water- what do you think?
