Where was the breaking news on the earthquake?
I experienced my second earthquake last night - so perhaps I'm getting a bit blasé about it now.
Five years ago I got to meet the neighbours in their dressing gowns as we all poured out onto the street. This time - nothing. It was so quiet I started to wonder if I had dreamt it. But my wife was convinced and one of the boys woke up too.
How can I find out what really happened at one in the morning? I turned to the 24 hour news channel on the bedroom tv. The pound was doing well against the dollar. Obama was speaking on the campaign trail. Someone else was talking about football.
Ah. I caught a glimpse of a BBC correspondent standing in the street in the middle of the night. Could this be the epicentre? No, it was Washington again.
Local radio at this time of the night is no longer local. And it was too much trouble to get out of bed to switch the computer on and check the internet.
We have all these global news channels - but how do you find out what's going in your own town?
When it was the Dudley earthquake I phoned in to The Post newsdesk and I was first to pass the information to the neighbours. But this time, I didn't want to seem silly - just in case it was a dream perhaps.
So I turned over and went back to sleep. I'd find out in the morning.
