Stuck in the middle with you: traditional to new media

By Nick Lockey on Feb 27, 08 09:36 PM in Media

Hi, I'm Nick and for the past 12 months I've been occupying the strange twilight zone that exists between traditional TV and the worldwide web.

Having begun my career in television development, churning out daft ideas for TV shows on a daily basis, a year ago I landed a job in the New Media department of a TV Production company and suddenly found myself catapulted headlong into the middle of a digital revolution. Broadcast television and the web are colliding and intertwining like never before and, as a New Media producer, I guess it's my job to try and weld the two bits together as seamlessly as possible.

The thing is that's easier said than done.

You see, the rules in this no-mans land between the TV screen and URL are still being written and no-one's exactly sure what this strange third space is supposed to look like.

Especially me. You see I'm really not a natural "techie". I can't write programme code, I regularly throw things at my laptop when it stops working and I only understood about half the jokes on The IT Crowd.

That said, I've learnt loads of interesting stuff about the web over the last year and every day I stumble across a new bit of the internet that makes me sit up and take notice. Whether it's a new piece of software that does something funky, a previously undiscovered web service that makes my life a bit easier or just something gleefully smutty on Youtube, there's always something that makes me glad I logged on that morning.

And that's pretty much what this blog is all about, sharing all the great stuff I'm finding on the web, reporting back with the latest happenings from the digital frontline and generally trying to figure out what the hell all of this stuff is supposed to mean.

Why not drop me a message or two along the way and let me know what you think?
