Boing Boing... Eh? Where's the celebration then?

By David Bailey on May 7, 08 05:04 PM in PR

I still can't quite believe that the Baggies have won promotion by ending up as Champions, whilst also reaching the semi-finals of the FA Cup where 'we' (you can see I'm a Baggies fan) put in a very creditable performance.

In fact, we haven't won anything for ages, and the chance for an open-top civic victory parade and party to celebrate our dizzying heights seemed a no-brainer. Well not to the PR chiefs down the Hawthorns who thought it was all too much hassle.

Being a Baggies fan, even a fairly lazy one like me who only makes a handful of matches a year, isn't exactly fun for much of the time. You're either biting your nails hoping to make promotion or the play-offs, or biting your nails hoping to avoid the drop.

Such is the reality of yo-yo football. Of course, it's all hugely exciting, but like others I do crave the boredom of mid-table mediocrity and safety. Until that happens it would make sense to celebrate our victories as they don't come around too often (my dad was still talking about that 68 Cup Final well into the 90s).

And unless the Baggies have a secret new business model, public celebrations usually mean more good publicity, better 'brand' awareness and an increase in fans' interest, more replica sales, better sponsorship and more ticket sales.

Revenue should go up, which might mean more money for better players. Indeed, Stoke City, who came in two points behind us and also won promotion, seem to understand this. Their victory celebration, featuring some remarkable fans' singing, can be viewed via You Tube here

Meanwhile, Sandwell Council are keen for the civic parade to go ahead and have said that if the Baggies change their mind they'll get the route organised. In the vain hope that anyone down at the Hawthorns is reading this, could you have a word with the gaffer? Go on, the fans clearly deserve it. What's more, it makes business sense.

As an honorary fan, I totally agree. There is nothing better than celebrating an important football victory by flooding the streets and soaking up the atmosphere... as well as of course making sense business wise. It is not too late, this Saturday would just be perfect!

yeah quite right... where would the baggies be without such great fans? giving us a bus top parade is the least the club can do and like you say would increase sales anyway. let's just hope they stay up!

But would they find Sandwell on the civic tour? I can't.
