There's a scary monster hanging over the country
My colleague over on Lifestyle (look to the right and scroll down), Jo Ind is having a bad week understanding the financial news.
Believe me Jo, you're not the only one. I read the newspaper three times yesterday and I still don't get this 'short selling' stuff. Thank goodness for children's tv.
So I was in the kitchen at teatime yesterday and I heard the word's from John Craven's replacement on Newsround "there's a scary monster hanging over the country at the moment..."
I have a great deal of respect for Newsround and the careful consideration that seems to go into explaining some of the nastier things about the grown-up world to youngsters who are bound to find out sooner or later. The editor's blog about how they cover disaster stories often makes very thoughtful reading.
When the kids came in for tea clearly some of the message had got home and even looked a little worried for a time.
CBBC Newsround and a blend of parental reassurance seems to be the best mix.
I bet even the great John Craven couldn't explain short selling though!

I enjoyed this, Mik, and, like you, appreciate the work Newsround does in explaining things to children. I don't know that I would characterise the credit crunch as a scary monster, though. That seems to be giving it too much respect. To me it's more like something grubby that you can't quite manage to wipe off your shoe. But there again, I don't understand it...
