I just called to say "wo ai ni"...
Time goes by quickly, we all know that, yet it still never ceases to astonish me. I have already been in Beijing for almost a month! A mere few weeks ago, I set out on my quest to make new friends, and that I have ticked off on my list relatively easily. I expect most things are simple enough to do if you're in the right frame of mind, determined and acknowledge the fact that some chinese people will only want to be your friend to practice their English. I've been told many many times before, mainly by my father and over-protective brother, "don't trust anybody!" Well, I'm no fool, I know that almost all relationships are formed on the 'I want, you need' mentality. "I want to see the sights of Beijing, you need to practice your English, so let's be friends!" I think it's fair to say that I have made a modest amount of friends in the past two weeks, and also bagged a modest new boyfriend, which was quite unexpected. Even more unexpected was the fact that he said "I love you" ("wo ai ni" in Chinese), in record breaking time.
And we all know that if you want to be a record breaker, dedication is what you need. And dedicated he is. Despite working until the early hours, 7 days a week, with his own wedding planning business, he managed to reschedule a hoard of meetings to accompany me to meet Incubus, a band he had never heard of, and see them play in Beijing. Lucky devil that I am, I entered a competition to be a roadie for Incubus for the day. The competition question was, "explain why you would be the best Incubus roadie"...I opted for some dry English wit, and answered, "I would be the best Incubus roadie, because I'm very careful when carrying expensive things." And no, I wasn't the only entrant, cheeky! So I got to schmooze with Incubus (well, mainly the roadies and caterers..), and watch the show. However, my favourite part of the day was by far walking around with the All Access VIP tag hanging around my neck.. Small things..., small minds..I know, I know.. .

Good stuff, Nikki. Enjoyed your post.. I loved Beijing when I was there a few years ago doing something for the BBC. To be honest, I was a little embarrassed because my idea of China was based around my watching Bruce Lee films of the early 70s. That was the basis of my initial impressions before I got there... But, I was so surprised how it's such an advanced city. Loved the people, loved the culture. There is so much respect and politeness especially in education - aspects clearly missing in our schools in England. Anyway, I look forward to reading your instalments.
