Netmums.com guide to childhood

By Jo Ind on Mar 24, 08 12:11 PM in

I have no desire to wish away Arch's infant years, but sometimes I find myself thinking wistfully of the days when I could curl up on the sofa and read a book.
Whenever I attempt this at the moment, Arch, who is not yet two, snatches the book from my hands and pretends to read it himself before tearing it up.
That's why my heart sank when I saw a new book called Toddling to Ten: Your Common Parenting Problems Solved had been published.
Compiled by Hollie Smith, it offers advice ranging from matters like "living with loss" (how to help a child cope with bereavement) to "job done" (how to get your kids to do the things they don't want to do.)
"Very useful," I thought, "especially the stuff on eating and sleeping and sharing, but when am I going to find time to read it?"

Fortunately, this book has been created by those that know....
It comes out of netmums.com, the on-line community founded by Siobhan Freegard which offers tips, ideas and friendship to mothers dealing with everything from nappies to hormones.
As a result the book comes in a mother-of-infant-friendly format, which means you can read it on the bus or in five minute bursts.
It sets out the problem, as described by a mum, whether that be sibling jealousy or a child telling lies. It prints what other netmums have said about it, it gives the experts' views (psychologist, life coach, nutritionist etc) and then it gives a bullet point summary.
The summary is a great joy to this particular mother who seemed to lose half her brain through childbirth and has never recovered it again. How did they know I was going to forget what I had read just three pages ago?
All in all, Toddling to Ten is a triumph of friendship, good sense and clarity.
I shall put it on the highest shelf I have in the hope that Arch won't discover it until he is past finding books good enough to eat.
