I'd like to teach the world to sing
As a child of the Seventies, the thought of teaching the world to sing was drummed into my head during copious TV advertising breaks. And when That's Life had its campaign to get Britain singing, I was well and truly hooked.
Well, now there is an opportunity to see the world singing. Pangea Day - celebrated annually on 10th May - aims to bring the world together through film and this year has come up with a really neat idea to get the people around the world singing each others national anthems.
Film makers have edited them into short videos, with a selection available on YouTube. They are really rather wonderful, and also rather revealing about national psyches.
Kenya sings to India is raw, gutsy and full of life, whereas Japan sings to Turkey is minimalist, beautiful and somewhat bewildering.
I hope there are more to come. The idea of an England Sings Scotland version particularly appeals, given the Flower of Scotland is all about a famous victory over the Sassenachs.
I also wonder if we could roll this out to city level. If we had a city song - assuming we don't already - perhaps we could twin with our partner cities around the world? Or ask Manchester to sing it to us?
What would you ask the Mancunians to sing back to us Brummies?!
