And life continues as normal in Beijing...
The news reports on the television and the headlines on the internet are stupefying.
Given that the country that this almighty tremor happened in is where I am right at this moment.
Being English, I am used to watching these terrific natural disasters on the television as I sip my tea and shake my head in dumbfoundness. It seems like a different world as I sit in my cosy cocoon of western safety.
It's times like this when I almost, but not quite, grasp the sheer size of China. The Earthquake rocked China on Monday afternoon....apparently.. I was working at the time, and didn't even notice so much as a shiver.
The students I was teaching at the time alerted me when their mobile phones starting going crazy with calls from relatives living in the south of China, where the quake hit. Thankfully all of their relatives were fine.
My friend from Shanghai called to inform me that all of the super-high office buildings in Shanghai had been evacuated. The dizzying height of the Jinmao Tower (421m-high) is one place I would not like to be when a supersize earthquake decides to rattle us.
I should imagine that the Earthquake has peed the government off some what, having brought the country even more bad press coverage. "Is Beijing really a safe place to be?" Is a question i'm sure most tourists and foreign ticket holders have been pondering.
Well, if you're reading this and looking for some honest advice about whether you should unpack your suitcase and return the new overly priced digital camera or not, I say not.
The buildings of Beijing, I have been told, are are Earthquake proof. Ready to handle up to 8 on the richter scale. And the likeliness of another Earthquake hitting China so soon are slim, right? Well...let's hope so.

A good read, as ever Nikki - and very, very difficult times for China...
If you google Catherine Sampson, you'll find another great site for catching up on all things news-wise (and crime fiction-wise!) coming from Beijing.
