Teenage Kicks

By Fiona Handscomb on May 5, 08 11:14 AM in Culture

Raw Energy 1.JPGI love dance. I hate teenagers. Yes, I was one once, but I'm sure I hated myself at the time too. So last night was a bit of an IDFB experiment to see if my passion for one would neutralise my dislike of the other - or indeed, vice versa.

As I've discovered; I now like teenagers that dance. At least, I like them when they're dancing. I had the dubious pleasure of an impromptu backstage tour at the interval and managed to get myself lost in a rabbit-warren of tantrums, hormones, glitter, shrieks, fights, hugs and squeals, so was glad to clamber back into the safety of my circle seat and watch them from a safe distance, however.

I am yet to see an IDFB show that I haven't gushed about. It's getting a bit boring. I thought the youth of today might give me something to be nasty about, but they have let me down as well, damn them.

International Raw Energy was an impressive showcase of youth dance companies from across the West Midlands with a suitably international flavour spanning a broad range of dance styles. After a rather neutral opening piece the show simply went from strength to strength and ended up being one of the most enjoyable evenings of dance I've been to, in spite of my initial antipathy.

I have a particular aversion to teenage boys, but the gymnastic antics of the Being Frank Youth Dance crew blew any stereotyped ideas of lanky, undisciplined sullenness right out of the water. I think I actually gasped out loud at one point; which was a bit embarrassing. It kind of made me wish that I'd done something a bit more worthwhile with my teenage years - like somersaulting around a metal bar rather than hanging around street corners drinking White Lightning.

The final Bollywood extravaganza, of course, just brought the house down. Admittedly, the house was probably full of parents, aunties, uncles and grandmas, but although I hate to admit it, had any of the little blighters been mine, I'd have been pretty proud as well.

Something that youth and dance both share is an infectious energy and I don't think I was the only person at the end of the showcase that wanted to leap up and start dancing too. Oh well, if you can't beat 'em - join 'em, But I do now think I am actually going to explode unless I get the chance to get off my seat and start shaking my own funky stuff at some point between now and the 25th May. Bring on the Salsa at Sunset ...

We love the photo that was taken of us, Beingfrank Youth, how would we go about talking to the photographer about using them for publicity?

Fiona Ferg said:

Yeah, they're great photos aren't they!

I'll get on to the lovely guys at the DanceXchange and ask them to contact you with the photographers details.

Well done on a brilliant performance that night, by the way xx

is it ok if we use

as a quote on our website?

I'm sure that would be fine, Henry. Fine with me, anyway!
