Game, set & match to Birmingham Alabama

By Sarah Gee on Aug 15, 08 09:16 AM in

Much has been, and will continue to be, written about the Council's use of a Birmingham Alabama skyline photo in their recycling leaflets.

Let's be honest: mistakes happen. I once sent out over 1,000 company Christmas cards where Christmas was spelled incorrectly, so I don't feel in any position to criticise this sort of cock-up. But what I have learnt over the years is that if you 'fess up to a mistake immediately, you do tend to get the angry or aggrieved party on your side somewhat quicker. Enough said.

But there is an unlikely hero of this whole situation. A man who, after speaking on yesterday's BBC Radio 4 PM programme, had listeners emailing in to suggest he should stand for British Prime Minister, such was the impact he had.

B'ham MAYOR.bmp

Stand forward Mayor of Alabama, Larry P Langford. He was clearly revelling in the unexpected publicity being received by his city and instead of running screaming in the opposite direction from the media - which was the impression that Birmingham, UK was creating to the BBC, according to legendary PM presenter Eddie Mair - was embracing the opportunity with gusto.

When asked if he enjoyed being Mayor, the charismatic Mr Langford said that he loved it because he could make things happen. He also went on to say that he preferred to get things moving and initiatives underway, rather than just talking about them. Admitting that sometimes projects went wrong, he said that when that happened (note: not 'if') he simply begged the forgiveness of local citizens.

I don't think I'd ever heard such enthusiasm and honesty from a politician and, to be honest, if was wonderfully refreshing. Eddie Mair could hardly contain himself. Worth a listen if the BBC's streaming is back online.

Game, set and match to Birmingham Alabama, I fear.
