Pint-Sized Review - Utopia, Church Street, B3
Oh... wait... what happened to the last three months again?
Yes I'll admit that I've been terrible updating this blog. But in anticipation of something pub-related I'm working on (of which more later) I thought I'd go out for a celebratory pint this afternoon.
I've been to Utopia plenty of times before, mainly in the evening though, when it's packed full of people from the local offices - similarly at lunchtime.
This afternoon though, it's dead. Ceased to be and so on. Which is only to be expected. Not many people, i suppose are desperate enough to drop in for a pint at 4.30 on a Tuesday.
The girl behind the bar - who incidentally wants to quit working behind a bar in Birmingham and move out to work on a farm in Ireland for some reason - pulls m quite a nice pint of Hook norton Hooky Gold, which is a bit surprising somewhere as trendy-bar as this.
While the place is understandably lifeless in the mid-afternoon, it livens up in the evening and is a good bet for a pint of ale if you're looking to avoid the more spit-and-sawdust end of the market in the city centre. The food is pretty good too, based on my trip here for lunch once.

Fantastic post!
More a non-recommendation but well worth the three month wait. However if I ever want a decent Thursday afternoon pint in decent surroundings I'll go in the Joint Stock. You don't convince me ('quite a nice pint') that reliable real ale is really the thing in Utopia.
Thanks also for the food comment. You went once for lunch - what, months ago?
Thanks for the feedback Clifford, I wouldn't've left it three months if I'd known you were waiting ;)
The OJS is a strange one - a London chain taken out to the Midlands. I quite like Fuller's but it's always been too cold and not tasted quite right there. And the island bar design means all the floor space isn't used very well IMHO.
