a tale of 2 kings
So, it's 50 bumps for my old mate michael jackson, self-proclaimed king of pop. Meanwhile, former monarch of all things shakin', elvis presley, has been a-mouldering in the grave for 30 years. Both have been on my mind this week since they have "new" records out.
Jackson, once the most exciting artist of his generation, has a greatest hits album out. yes, another one, modestly called king of pop.
elvis's bones have been thoroughly humped by a jumped-up twerp called spankox with many of his old classic sides being remixed.
i've never heard such a mess in my life.
if the cats at sun records reckoned heartbreak hotel needed a whooshy noise all over it, i'm sure they would have put one there.
and when the king sang "baby let's play house" it wasn't a request for a 4/4 drum loop and cowbells.
the whole thing sucks. it's like drawing a pair of tits on the mona lisa with a felt-tip marker.
Meanwhile, jacko's compilation claims its uniqueness by dint of being compiled from votes cast by his british fans. well, what's left of them.
another pointless exercise.
surely these fans already have the songs in question and won't need to buy the album?
you wouldn't guess, of course, looking at the track-list... it's pretty much the same as his last greatest hits and the one before that.
the cover's a lovely red with jacko's arm apparently in plaster. i'd love to scrawl on that with my mona lisa marker.
his scary face is obscured by a hat with just an airbrushed chin poking out.
there's no denying the fact that michael jackson has made some great records, there are three or four on the compilation. but he's also made some mawkish self-aggrandising stinkers too, and most are found here.
i wonder if he even knows the album's out. apparently there's a different edition for different countries.
they'll all be pretty much the same, i imagine, as pop is a universal language.
what happened to the rumoured new material?
Is anyone really that bothered?
when it comes down to comparing icons, elvis will always beat jackson because, even in his worst days, e.p was just so cool.
one of my favourite elvis recordings turned up on an mp3 blog recently. it's the king cussing and telling dirty jokes to his bandmates. a quick google search should find it.
i can only imagine the language he would have used if he's heard the work of spankox.
