Philharmonic fun
The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra has a long and successful association with Northampton's Royal & Derngate, notably at the venue's famous annual celebration of the work of local musical legend Malcolm Arnold.
This weekend the RPO is staging one of its regular concerts in Derngate (Beethoven 5 is the big draw). But as a prelude and part of its ongoing drive to get more young people interested in classical music there's a special workshop in the afternoon followed by the chance for families to sit in on the orchestra's rehearsal for the concert, including the big Beethoven.
The Creepy Crawlies workshop this Sunday (Jan 18) runs from 1.00pm until 2.45pm with an opportunity to watch the orchestra in rehearsal afterwards from 3.00pm till 3.30pm. It's ideal for children from 5 to 10 years old and their families. Younger brothers and sisters are welcome to come along.
This is a great opportunity to introduce youngsters to the excitement of live music and get the chance to sit in on a full live rehearsal. The free workshop afternoon will also include a backstage tour of Royal & Derngate. Workshop instruments will be provided but participants are welcome to bring their own instruments along if they have one.
The Creepy Crawlies workshop is free of charge but places are limited. Call Alex Soulsby on 01604 627566 or email alex.soulsby@royalandderngate.co.uk to book a place or to find out more.
The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra will be performing on the Derngate stage at 7.30pm that evening, in a concert which also includes Vaughan Williams' The Wasps Overture. Call the Box Office on 01604 624811 or visit www.royalandderngate.co.uk to book for the concert (tickets from £13.00 to £30.00 with under 12s tickets from £5.00).

I'm doing some follow-up research re organisation of this event. I'd be grateful if anyone who goes to workshop contacts me, or anyone who applied for a place.
