Friendly dorms at the YWCA
It's easy to take your home comforts for granted, but one thing that you have to compromise on when travelling for an extended period of time is the quality of accommodation you can afford to stay in. While we were open to the idea of hostels I must admit we were far from keen, but we have been very pleasantly surprised.
Our experiences so far have not found us in any 18-30s Benidorm style scenario, but in clean, safe accommodation offering real value for money in central locations.
While the YWCA in Boston was a little bizarre in that there were a number of older women with health and mental problems in long-term residence, The Manhattan Inn in New York was full of like-minded travellers ranging in age from 18 to 50.
Private rooms are available in most hostels but the more cost-effective option is a shared dorm. I can't deny that it's strange sharing a room with complete strangers, and it's been a long time since I slept in a bunk bed, but we have so far been fortunate to find friendly and well-mannered room mates who enjoy their early nights.

Maybe after you've been travelling long enough you'll check yourself back into the YWCA with your own mental health problems!! lol
