Unmistakable Nashville
We've just left Nashville where we spent a few days and I have to say I'd love to have stayed longer. Having moved from big city to big city in the first part of our trip it was a welcome change to go somewhere we could enjoy a slower pace of life and see a very different side to America.
Walking into the city centre you find the usual banks and tall buildings but almost deserted streets. There are cable boxes along the roads that play country music which start to set the scene, but it's when you turn onto Broadway that it really comes to life.
There are countless saloon bars with bands playing live country and honky tonk music, as well as shops with the widest selection of cowboy boots, hats and shirts I've ever seen and real-life cowboys browsing through the displays. We also found a record store with original Dolly Parton, Gene Pitney and Elvis Presley records to name a few.
We went to the Professional Bull Riding Rodeo which was a major event with a huge and loyal following, and of course more cowboys than we've ever seen in one place before. Similar to other American sports, they stop for commercial breaks every 10 minutes or so and the many, many sponsors each have their moment in front of the crowd. I couldn't imagine an English football game being played in six parts to allow for adverts on ITV.
When visiting so many places in a short space of time you sometimes have to look hard to find the thing that makes each town or city what it is. You don't have to look for that in Nashville, it's a place with a very strong identity, a very strong country music scene and an atmosphere that simply makes you smile. When you're on Broadway there's no mistaking that you're in Nashville. I don't think you can manufacture that but it has reminded me how important it is to know your USP and make sure people identify with it.

Interesting point about the USP of a city, Charlotte. I wonder if the leaders of Birmingham (UK) know its unique selling point?
Cadbury, cricket, Matthew Boulton & industry, baltis and heavy metal are already established;
I think it's time we made the most of the fact that Cluedo was invented by a bloke in Kings Heath.

What a sad angry man Jed obviously is. I am making an assumption of what he is like as that is obviously what he likes to do - lazy, stupid, harsh, parasite are very harsh words to describe someone he doesn't know, someone who has been working for a living (so not exactly a parasite) and who is now taking a career break to go and see a bit of the world. Life is short and why not enjoy it and make the most of it - it doesn't make you lazy or stupid. Most people who are reading your column are obviously enjoying it Charlotte so please keep it up!
Thanks Steve, I don't actually think I knew the Cleudo one. Others are the Jewellery Quarter, the number of Michelin-starred restaurants we now have and the accessibility of the city.
Thanks Sarah, glad you're enjoying the blog, please keep reading as I've got a lot more places left to see.
Hay all the life is always stylist and every time visit and see my one for extra life style.
Nashville sounds like a very individual place in the US, whereas I imagine many of the main cities could be fairly similar, with the exception of New York! Having just come home from a greek holiday we met some American's whilst we were away (some good and some not so good) so I can start to imagine the different types of places and people you are seeing based on the classy and the trashy US citizens we met. Good to hear your thoughts, please keep it up! You do have some fans!
Charlotte, I am enjoying your blog and your views on the places you are visiting. Please keep it coming it's all interesting stuff.
