The Birmingham Post is Regional Newspaper of the Year

By Marc Reeves on Apr 23, 08 03:27 PM in

Don't you just love awards - when you win them, that is?

When I don't, I'm a really sore loser, and will cheerfully undermine the credibility and integrity of everyone and everything involved in the process, from the judges to the winners - and even the table decorations and the music at the event.

But all is sweetness and light at The Birmingham Post as we bask in the glory of being declared the Regional Newspaper of the Year in the 2008 Newspaper Awards, sponsored by Production Journal.

These celebrate excellence in design and print quality, and the category we won recognises also sales performance, campaigns and how close a title is to its readership.

We were up against the big names in the regional press, and shared the stage with national winners such as the FT and the Telegraph, so we're pretty pleased with the accolade, especially as it comes in our anniversary year, and at a time when we're making great strides with birminghampost.net.

But best of all is the right to have a strapline on our front page for the next 12 months that reads 'Regional Newspaper of the Year'.

If we don't retain the title in 2009, I look forward to blaming the catering at the awards ceremony.

The Post is undoubtedly one of the best things about Birmingham. It sets standards that others are struggling to match.

Marc - I woke up this morning at 6am to BBC Radio 4's Today programme and, there they were talking about The Bham Post's story about foreign footballers requiring a good level of English! Way to go!... even the nationals will be reporting The Post soon. Well done to all concerned - !!!
