Who loves Gordon more because he held a Cabinet meeting in Birmingham?

By Joanna Geary on Sep 8, 08 03:14 PM in Politics

That's the question Marc Reeves decided to ask readers on micro-blogging service Twitter today:

The response? Well it was, rather predictably, lukewarm when it came to the PM.

ellielovell was the first to respond and summed up the reaction well:

  • "Every little bit helps but I think 'love' is a bit strong!! Maybe 'not hate' would be better," she suggested.

And some dismissed the meeting as a stunt:

  • "Not one single person. If it wasn't just PR fluff it would be damming that they've only "now" decided to take notice of Brum," said bounder.

Here are some of the other responses:

  • "i'd like him better if he held it mr egg... michael foot would have..." - birmpostandrew
  • "oh yes, the concern over the uncertain employment future of myself & my colleagues (& indeed your colleagues) just melts away as a result of him & his army of submachinegun-totting goons smiling at me on the way to work this morning." - star_one
  • "Not me. But I do like to hear him and the cabinet using wm examples of excellence. Lets hope we're as good as they say." - podnosh
  • "Not me. But it doesn't make me dislike him anymore either. I am entirely disinterested in where Cabinet meets." - jezhiggins

What do you think?

Love him, more? Probably not. But, I appreciate that the a whole cabinet of the British government were forced to come to Birmingham. Gordon didn't say alot that was new, but speaking without notes to the audience was impressive. He seemed genuine though the message was for a wider community. He talked alot about the global economy, the need for smarter green technology and Midlands technology expertise, which affect GB plc but not about things like fuel relief, recession etc.

I was disappointed by the lack of diversity in the 200 odd ordinary people from the 'communities' listening to Brown and his ministers. Only a handful of people were present and invited.

I hope that this is not a one-off stunt and hope they return from their London cubbyhole very soon.
ps Digby Jones was great banging the drum for Birmingham

I guess the true test will be where the Cabinet go from here; will they deliver on the promise they made to us to respond to every query or concern made? Will they repeat this exercise again in the future? And, most importantly, how will the short 30 minute discussion each minister made influence decision-making?
