Birmingham's virtual future

By Conservative Party Conference on Oct 5, 10 06:25 PM in

Alun Thorne writes.....Have just sat through fourth Mike Whitby address in 36 hours - and he was certainly on message for one of the more exciting announcements for Birmingham to come out of this week's conference.

Coun Whitby was on hand at Nuvo in Brindleyplace to help Birmingham Science Park, Aston - along with their partners Cisco and Tata Communications - launch the UK's first 'science park without walls' which is effectively utilising the latest teleconferencing technology and super-fast broadband to bring global businesses face-to-face without ever leaving their office. The science park will be the home of the UK's first hub to offer these facilities.
In theory it all sounds rather exciting although Phil Smith, the UK boss of Cisco, did admit that the technology meant he had only travelled to the States once this year for business instead of once a month as he had previously and that he expected to travel there only once in the year ahead. Good news for a business's bottom line, good news for the environment - pretty worrying for the airline industry. Runway extension anyone?

Bravo to building a virtual future. Making it a reality for expanding business collaboration and engaging a broader audience are increasingly important. Local experts including Nick Burton (Rare), David Burden (Daden), Lucy Hooberman (Warwick U) and Jonnie Turpie (Maverick TV) will meet for a panel discussion organised by Science Capital on 13 October at Hotel du Vin Birmingham to discuss ways to move forward, and welcome input from the community.
