It's interesting to learn that the Dalai Lama arrived in Britain this week to talk to our prime minister about the plight of the Tibetan people and China's stubborn refusal to grant freedom to Tibet - at least in the form of autonomy, if not independence.
And although our Gordon Brown did not invite him to Downing Street - on the basis that the Dalai Lama is not a politician but a religious leader - he did meet him in Lambeth Palace where they discussed the aftermath of the recent earthquake in Sichuan and the relations between China and the people of Tibet.
Now I have nothing against genuine spiritual leaders - like the Dalai Lama, Martin Luther King and Mahatma Gandhi. It's clear that these are/were visionaries with an extraordinary substance - a sense incomparable to us mere mortals.
But I do object to the innumerable cults and 'holy men' that prey upon the vulnerable, the poor or the needy. And there are quite a few of these both here in Britain and abroad.
