"Doing a Leeds"

By Kym Smith on May 28, 08 12:35 PM in

God forbid, I don't want my club to "do a Leeds". When I first heard about David Gold's latest media interview it was a link to an article in one of the tabloids that made rather depressing reading.

Luckily, I have now read one or two other versions (including the Post's!) that makes for more balanced reading. It does indeed sound as though he has picked himself up and wants to do something proactive to lead us forward into next season.

The signing of Lee Carsley has been a positive step; although he is in footballing terms a veteran, the ex-Everton man could provide decent leadership in the middle of the field, something we have been sadly lacking since the days of Robbie Savage.

It will be interesting to see what other moves are made in the transfer market over the next few weeks.

I am pleased to see that a new deal is on the table for Seb Larsson; as our Player of the Season we should be doing everything in our power to make sure he is still a Blues player by the time the transfer window closes at the end of August.

However, I have no doubt that one or two players will be moved on and it would not surprise me if one of those were Olivier Kapo, who for me comes under the heading of "gifted but mercurial" and would be a very expensive luxury in the Championship. If a quality player has to be sacrificed, then I would far rather it was him than Larsson.

I would also be sad to see Mikael Forssell leave and will be watching the news of his contract negotiations closely.

For the meantime though, the closed season is likely to become silly season and we will be regaled with tales of the proverbial one that got away. These stories never cause me anything other than irritation; why on earth tell us about the players that we missed out on for one reason or another?

I also see that tales about Carson Yeung's involvement have resurfaced, which dismays me slightly. This caused enough instability the last time without it all rearing its ugly head again for the summer.

With only a rather meaningless Euro 2008 competition to keep us occupied over the next few months, the football media are going to have far too much time on their hands and we are going to be deluged with ideas and speculation, most of which we need to take little notice of if we are not to drive ourselves insane.

What we as fans have to be sure of before the start of the new campaign is that the Board are going to stand by their words and lead the club forward. We are all quite prepared to "pull together" as David Gold has requested, but we reserve the right to say what we think. We wouldn't be fans otherwise.

Your phrase 'Doing a Leeds' what a pile of rubbish! Leeds were taken apart by a chairman who had an ego bigger than the bank balance of the club. The only things the situation have in common is money, the fact that Risdale was spending what we didnt have and really couldnt expect to earn. Your problem was decisions, You as a club have money, you have a loyal fanbase, you spent money, you just didnt spend it on the right players, Larsson is a class act, Arsenal's shortsighted outlook is your gain, he is the perfect replacement for Flamini, Mvumba will show just how good he is. apart from that who were your other success stories? you uncover one of the best young players around Zarate, but you cant keep him, you buy Mcsheffrey, a goal scorer and then play him out on the wing, how did that work out for you? Steve Bruce is a good manager, but you simply didnt give him the loyalty he deserved, the same way you are now with the
Gold and Sullivan. If it were not for them you would be exactly where Leeds are now, still rebuilding. I as a football fan, love the sport and love my team, but recognise the its not the sport of football, its the business of football, I want Blues to do well, I want them to come straight back up as champions, they still have the team to do it and a huge umbrella payment which you dont have to blow in clearing debts, you can make your team even stronger, and become a team the will survive with relative ease in the premiership. You need to keep that clown Carsen Yeung out of your club, because he knows business not football and doesnt have a clue about what the club means to its fans. You are not Leeds and I hope you never get into the same situation as we did. You never know one day, Leeds and Blues may play each other in the top league, without the violence and bad blood, just for the fans and for the game.
