A sign of things to come...?

By James Peacock on Sep 3, 08 12:10 AM in

Welcome to my blog. Due to some teething technical problems it has been a long time in coming.

The role of the humble journalist is changing fast given the world's increasing reliance on the internet for pretty much everything.

The great thing about a good newspaper, of course, is that its audience can get more: witty comment, enlivening features and hard news are standard but now the benefits of video journalism, podcasts, forums and blogs such as this are becoming more prominent in the way the journalist works.
Such new media advancements are aimed solely at providing a more complementary and comprehensive coverage for the reader and that is primarily what (I hope) this blog will add to followers of The Birmingham Post.

To make good my word, I have included some links to the type of video journalism which will become a regular feature of my work.

Excuse aspects of the editing and the (fairly amateurish) quality of broadcasting.
Like most things, both will improve with time and experience, but as a taster I think it gives a good idea of what the newspaper journalist might be expected to produce in the future.

By clicking on the following the links, you will find a selection of video interviews from the British Par 3 Championship, which was held last month.

Tim Stimpson, the former Leciester Tigers and England full-back, talks rugby, Martin Johnson and ELVs.

Mark Mouland, the local favourite who won the tournament, speaks about his victory.

A typically enthusiastic Kriss Akabusi talks about British Athletes' chances at the Beijing Olympics

Ardent Liverpool supporter Graeme Storm talks golf, and what it was like playing with Manchester United's Lee Sharpe and with Open and US Open Champion Tony Jacklin

They say a picture is worth a thousand words. And quite frankly I would rather watch an interview on video than read about it. Thats not to say I don't enjoy and well crafted and witty article, its just that modern journalism needs to utilise the tools of modern media.

Is this a job plug or what???

Really impressive range of interviews. It's often at events like these that you manage to get a more tangible insight into the views of current and past sportsmen..

Excellent work

Excellent insight - often such events are the best places to find real and honest opinions of sportsman both past and present. The journalist seems to understand how to relate to the individual - it is sometimes more difficult to do with the written word

I think that the interviews give a much more personal insight into the lives of these sportsmen and how they really are. It would be difficult to understand the real enthusiasm that Kris Akabusi obviously still has for British Athletics purely through reading an interview. I think that this kind of media will become more and more popular in the years to come.

I think these are really good way of complementing your coverage. I wouldn't worry too much about the picture or editing quality - after all, it's what the interviewees are saying that matters.
